Introduction
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, such as the Internet. It enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. Applications running on a computing device, e.g. a laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet, can make use of the VPN functionality to securely access resources on the private network, e.g. email servers, file servers and printers.
One popular use for VPNs is accessing region-restricted websites and content. For example, a website may only be accessible from within the United States; by connecting to a VPN server located in the US, you can ‘trick’ the website into thinking you are accessing it from within the US, and therefore grant you access. Similarly, you may be able to access region-locked streaming content on services such as Netflix or BBC iPlayer by connecting to a VPN server in the appropriate country.
In this article we will take a look at how you can set up a VPN on your Fios router, using both the stock firmware and DD-WRT open source firmware:
-Stock Firmware-
1) Log into your router’s web interface. This can be done by entering your router’s IP address into your web browser’s address bar (the IP address is usually 192.168.1.1 unless you have changed it). You will be prompted for your username and password – enter these and click ‘Login’.
2) Click on ‘Network Connection’ and then ‘WAN’ in the left-hand sidebar menu.
3) Click on ‘Edit’ next to your WAN connection (this will probably be labeled as ‘Dynamic IP / DHCP Client’ unless you have changed it).
4) Click on ‘Enable this connection’ checkbox if it is not already checked/enabled. Then check the ‘Connect Automatically when computer starts checkbox too if you want your VPN to connect automatically whenever your router starts up or reboots for any reason 5) In the ‘Gateway(PPP server) IP Address / Hostname’ field enter either: The Hostname of your VPN Provider; or The IP Address of one of your VPN Provider’s servers (you will need to get this from them). 6) In the Username field enter your username for your VPN account – this will have been supplied by your provider when you signed up for their service 7) In teh Password field enter thee password for yoru VNP account 8) Save teh changes bu clicking on he red Save button at he top right of teh page 9 that s lt! What is a VPN and What Does It Do?
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, routing your internet connection through its own secure server, encrypts all of your data before it leaves your device. That means that anyone trying to snoop on your traffic – whether it’s your ISP, your employer, or even a hacker on public Wi-Fi – will only be able to see that you’re connected to a VPN server. They won’t be able to see what you’re doing online.
How to Set Up a VPN on Your Fios Router
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a private network that encrypts and tunnels your internet traffic through a server in another location. This allows you to securely access your home network from anywhere in the world. Setting up a VPN on your Fios router is a simple and effective way to protect your home network. In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up a VPN on your Fios router.
Step One: Choose a VPN Service
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows you to set up a private, secure internet connection on your own terms. You can choose the server location, encrypt your data, and hide your IP address — all of which are beneficial if you’re concerned about online security and privacy.
There are many different VPN services available, but we recommend ExpressVPN because it’s easy to use and offers a wide range ofserver locations. Plus, it doesn’t keep logs of user activity so your identity will remain confidential.
Once you’ve signed up for a VPN service, you’ll need to set it up on your Fios router. Follow the steps below to get started.
Step Two: Set Up Your VPN on Your Router
Now that you have your router set up and ready to go, it’s time to set up your VPN. This can be a little bit tricky, but we’ll walk you through it step by step.
1. The first thing you’ll need to do is log into your router’s settings. You can do this by typing your router’s IP address into your browser’s address bar.
2. Once you’re logged in, find the setting for VPN or Virtual Private Network. This setting may be under a different heading depending on your router, so just look around until you find it.
3. Once you’ve found the VPN setting, enter the information for your VPN provider. This will include the server address, username, and password.
4. Save your changes and exit the router settings.
5. Now all you need to do is connect to your VPN and start browsing!
Step Three: Connect to Your VPN
To connect to your VPN, go to the settings page on your router. On the left-hand side, you should see a menu. Click on “Network” and then “VPN.”
Next, click on the “Add Profile” button. This will bring up a new window. In the “Name” field, enter a name for your VPN connection. In the “Gateway” field, enter the IP address or hostname of your VPN server.
In the “Authentication Type” drop-down menu, select “Password.” Then, enter your username and password in the appropriate fields.
Finally, click on the “Connect” button. Your router will now attempt to connect to your VPN server. If everything is configured correctly, you should see a notification that says “VPN Connection Established.”
Conclusion
Now that you have your VPN set up on your router, you can enjoy the increased security and privacy that comes with it. Remember to keep your router’s firmware up to date for the best experience.
